The Project

The existing kitchen in this property was very small and offered no family space that could be used by the owners. The building was tired with an old conservatory to the rear. The client wished to explore a more modern, unique addition which enhanced views both from and to the house.

A 2-part split wing concept that took advantage of the sun pattern from the rear was used for the extension. Aided by the large openings and contemporary finishes, this idea allowed the internal spaces to be well defined while remaining open in nature.

Design Challenge

The concept design focused on the solar analysis carried out. This informed the design of the extension as it was important to breathe light into the spaces while minimising the negative effects of excess solar gain. It was essential to get natural light deep into the plan of the property without causing overheating from the sun shining through the vast glazing. As such, 3D models were created and the information gained from recreating the sun paths throughout the year helped to determine the position of the winged extension.
