The Project

After acquiring this plot of land, our client wished to build their dream home. The site was restricted in terms of access and the overgrown nature of the grounds with various animals inhabiting the site. Perhaps though, the hardest challenge of all was the strong neighbour contention.

The new structure hugs the site well and the use of locally found materials, combined with expert care in construction, makes this a beautifully hidden building. The internal layout speaks well to the country house theme with lovely natural finishes.

Design Challenge

The external materials while key, proved an easy decision to make. The beautiful brickwork with a slate plinth, exposed natural timber lintels and fascias, aluminium gutters, lime render and handmade clay rooftiles give a beautifully rustic appearance and a testament to local materials and skill.

The challenge came from site restrictions that meant it could not be accessed by motorised vehicles. However, with trollies, horses and lots of muscle the build went ahead and on time. The name of the new house ‘The Barrows’, lends itself to the countless hours the builders spent wheeling materials up and down the lane to the main road.
